Initially a significant sand quarry from the first to mid-1900s before getting an agricultural region and finally now’s HDB property, Potong Pasir literally means”cut sand” in Malay. If one visits the home estate today, it’s tough to envision the Potong Pasir of older. Comprising low-lying sands and ponds connected into this Kallang River — among Singapore’s most important drainage stations — Potong Pasir endured routine flooding previously. The open region is getting an outdoor classroom, providing students the chance to learn about plants and their capacity to cleanse rainwater run-off, although the open plaza is getting a new gathering area for residents.

A 1.2km stretch of this Kallang Park Connector, which joins Kallang Riverside Park into Bishan-Ang Mo Kio Park, also runs through the property, from Lorong 8 Toa Payoh into Potong Pasir Avenue 1. The lush greenery affirms important communities of biodiversity and offers shade from the blazing heat.

A kampong Way of Life

As a little, older housing estate, Potong Pasir supplies a rate of life that long-time citizens are used to.

Along the pathway to the river, the continuous shuffle of bleary-eyed students hurrying to college shortly becomes a background to the heavy chopping beats out of the butchers. The young and the older mingle amid the odor of soya milk and freshly-baked croissants out of N&B Snacks (#01-31) across the corner, the more inviting aroma of coffee beans and powder out of Chop Hua Heng (#01-27), along with the aromatic financial bee hoon from Broadway Food Centre in 147 Potong Pasir Avenue 1. A gorgeous cacophony.
